Forgetting to remember

Sometimes the best inspiration for a post comes from other bloggers, so today's post is courtesy of Karie over at Hit It.  Her post, Remembering 9-11-01, is about the Healing Field 9/11 Flag Memorial.

I'm glad I had a chance to steal be inspired by her post, because we saw the same memorial several years ago and I had completely forgotten about it.

One day in September 2005, I headed over to the library with the kids and was dumbfounded at the sight that was surrounding the library that day.  There were flags everywhere...literally thousands of them.

Forgetting about books for a while, we walked through the flags, amazed at the breathtaking view and the symbolism each flag represented.  Actually, the kids really didn't have a clue why they were there, as Amanda wasn't quite five yet and Brandon was still a cherubic two-year-old.

But I was amazed, so naturally I made the kids be amazed with me.

There was a flag for every person killed on 9/11, as well as flags from various countries with names of soldiers who had been killed in the war.

I hope to one day see this memorial again, now that the kids have a better understanding of its significance, and because I need just one more reason to cry about that day.

I would have given my left nut to have had a wide angle lens.  There were so many flags, I wasn't able to truly grasp the magnitude of the display.

Wow that last pic really says it all. The innocent boy walking free amongst those who gave their lives.

Very nice post. Wonderful sentiments.

Just awesome, I don't think mr. B. could get any cuter walking between the flags.

You'd have given your left nut? Is there something your not telling us?

Ya! now that it is mentioned, what about your left nut, didn't know you had one? well, ya learn something new every day.

Marvelous photos! And I think you are so fantastic for helping your kids understand the issue. (Well, as much as anyone can ever understand such madness.)

Carol, Bersercules, and anyone else concerned with my nuts... think figurative, not literal.

Kim,

Wide angle or not the pictures are beautiful. I love them, especially with the children. I look forward to the day where there are no new memorials like this.
