Update on change

As of this morning, here are my body stats after one week:

Weight:  150 lbs (-2 lbs)
Chest: 37" (-1")
Waist: 31" (-1")
Hips: 38.5" (-.5")
Thighs: 23.25" (-.75")
Calves:  14" (same)

Approximate body fat: 27.5% (-.5%)
41.3 lbs fat
108.7 lean (muscle, bone, body water)

It's not surprising I dropped a few inches the first week - when I start to eat better and exercise I lose a bit of bloat right away.  My body also responds quite well to exercise...you'd think I would be more inclined to keep it up.  My food is certainly not 100% healthy, but I drink far less soda and fast food than I was which is making a huge difference both in my body and my wallet.

I can feel and see differences that I'm sure aren't visible to anyone else, but I know every inch of my body.  I am certainly my own worst critic when it comes to areas that need improvement.

Wish me luck for the week to come!

I don't need my arms anyway

I did a killer bicep workout today and I hurt!  Well, I won't really start hurting until tomorrow, but I can feel the burn already.  I did some interval training on the treadmill before I shredded my biceps, thanks to a co-worker who acts as my bad-ass coach.  He almost made me cry...almost

For the last three hours of my shift I felt useless, my arms as strong as Jell-O.  The only way I could scratch my nose was to walk around with my arms swinging to get enough momentum to whip my hand up to swat my face.  For all of you who are wondering, yes it is OK to pretend you don't know me if you see me at the airport.

Anyhoo, I'm feeling great and making tiny bits of progress.  My sides are pouring over my waistband a little less than they were a week ago.  Yay me.

I have my work cut out for me

Um...I measured myself today.  And I calculated my body fat.  Reality bites.  When I first announced my desire to make some changes, I stated something I regret just a little...
"I'm not afraid to be up front about my measurements..."
I guess this means I need to stay true to my word.  Crap.  Here you go world...

As of 10/07/2009 (measurements at largest part)

Height:  5' 10"
Weight:  152 lbs
Chest:  38"
Waist:  32"
Hips:  39"
Thighs: 23 1/4"
Calves:  14"

Body fat:  28% (!!!!!!!!)
42.6 lbs fat (hold on while I cry for a few minutes)
109.4 lbs lean (muscle, bone, body water)

In the past I have measured body fat with the dunking method (water displacement), caliper, and measurements, and they have all given pretty much the same results.  So, I'm fairly confident in how I measured this morning.  Again, click here for a link to the body fat test I used.

Time to pack my workout clothes for tomorrow...

File under *do-over*

I had every intention of making today another great day of eating decent and working out.  Lunch was packed, clothes ready to go, mindset...set.  Then it hit me:  PIZZA PARTY.  Ohhhhh CRAP!  Besides Taco Bell, pizza is my next favorite food that I could live on forever.  It was the last day our team would all be together at work, so we celebrated with a few giant, delicious pizzas.

I can't stop at just one piece of pizza, especially when it is so damn good!  So I inhaled three and a half giant pieces, and a cup of soda.  Three and a half!!  Had I not been in uniform, my pants would have been unbuttoned, the zipper down, my belly resembling eight months pregnant.

At that point, going to the gym had been deleted from my list of things to do.  For whatever reason, it popped right back up to the top and I grabbed my bag and headed down to the gym.  I hate it when that happens, when my conscience has an adrenaline surge and makes me do things I don't want to do.  Regardless, I was going to do my best on an overly-full gut.

Stupid conscience.  That was the worst decision ever!  I tried to do interval sprints, and about ten minutes in I felt like I was going to vomit all over the treadmill.  My body was suggesting that I STOP RUNNING.  I couldn't hit that stop button fast enough.  I learned my lessons:  1. No running on a loaded stomach  2. Either stop at one piece of pizza or don't eat any at all!

That pizza stayed with me until 9:00 tonight.  Yep...I was not hungry again for eight more hours.  How's that for getting healthy?  Tomorrow is a day off and if I can pull myself together, I will work out in the gym here at the apartment complex.  No excuses, and no pizza!

It's a start

Today I began the journey to the center of my girth. BA DA BUM...  First thing this morning I weighed in at 152.6 pounds...eh, not bad.  The only reason I even weigh myself is so that I can calculate my bodyfat percentage, otherwise it is useless.  And it will remain useless until I can find my tape measure, which is the other factor in figuring how much fat I'm lugging around.  Click here for a link to the body fat calculator I always use.

I didn't start the day with a bang, instead I only made sure of a couple things.  First, I packed my lunch.  Now, it wasn't the healthiest food in the world, but it kept me from caving in to my Taco Bell cravings.  I also left my wallet at home...another surefire way I don't buy crap I don't need.  It's not easy when there are a million fast food choices at the airport within a five-minute walk.

Second, I packed my workout clothes into my backpack the night before.  The airport has a small, very well equipped gym, for a small yearly fee.  The only benefit to having a split shift is that I have two hours in the middle of my day to work out, shower, and eat.  That will change when my schedule changes next week, but I'll worry about that when next week rolls around.

I kept my goals for today very simple, yet they were huge in terms of changing bad habits and creating new ones.  I ran, jogged, plodded my way through about ten minutes on the treadmill, a little embarassed at how pathetic I must have looked.  I felt awkward, out of shape, and tired.  But I was there.  Then I did a couple leg machines and called it a day.  Again, not a great workout by any means, but I was there.

As soon as I'm off the computer I'll be packing my lunch and workout clothes.  I have very little time in the morning to do much, so if I don't get it done tonight, it won't get done at all.  I know myself well enough to know that I'll  bail on myself in the morning if I'm not already prepared.  Note to self:  change that about self.

So far so good, one day down...a lifetime to go.  *deep breaths*

Metamorphose

Metamorphose  [met-uh-mawr-fohz]:  to change the form or nature of; transform

Now that my life feels a bit less chaotic and stressful than it has been for quite some time, I'm ready to set some goals and really focus on getting my body, mind, and health in shape.  While my reasons are mostly rooted in vanity (I want to look good!!), I do need to treat my insides better.

At my height of 5'10", my weight is around 155 lbs, give or take a couple.  So I'm not concerned about weight loss per se.  What I do want is to firm up, gain some muscle, and lose the jiggle.  People frequently tell me that I'm skinny, but what they don't realize is that there is ample flab that's hidden underneath my clothing.  Lots of dimples, ripples, bulges, rolls...you name it, it's there, and I don't like it.

I have always struggled with maintaining a healthy lifestyle and with making exercise a regular habit.  I figured that sharing a challenge such as this on in a public forum would help keep me accountable and serve as a great source of support.  I am lucky to have so many supportive people who read my blog.

I will use the blog as a way to vent my struggles, share my successes, and ask for help when I need it.  I'm not afraid to be up front about my measurements, etc, so I'll be posting those as well.  Tonight I plan on taking *before* pictures (EEK!) which may or may not be made public in the future.  That will probably depend on how well I succeed with this challenge.  Also tonight I will sit down and set some specific goals and timelines so that I will have a way of gauging myself.

So all of you out there who are reading, I'm counting on you to keep me accountable!  I'm sure at one point or another I will want to quit and throw in the towel.  You'll hear me gripe all about it and that's when I'll need you to give me a giant kick in the butt and tell me to stop  my whining and get back to work.

:)
